Pie Party and Some Other Musings

Every year for the past almost 10 years, (minus the 4 years we were in Washington in an 800 sq ft cabin) my family and I have been hosting what we like to call a pie party.
I can't take credit for this AMAZING idea because that would be just wrong to my East Coast relatives who started it way back when, but I will say the minute I heard about a Pie Party I was all over it like Meringue on Lemon Pie.

I usually have it the second Saturday in November because to me it's a way to have Thanksgiving (minus the Turkey) with ALL my friends and family.
It's also a way for me to get my favorite dessert!!
When I was preparing the prizes this year I got SO excited for this party I almost did a happy Pie Party dance. I'm pretty sure it would have looked a bit like Elaine on Seinfeld so I reigned in my excitement and got to putting together those prizes you see up there.
We give out prizes to 3 categories;
Best in Savory
Best in Show
and
UGLY but it Tastes Damn Good
aka
UBITDG!!
While putting together prize baskets, I thought about all the families that would come with their delectable pies and my heart overflowed with gratitude for many reasons. The first reason that my heart was exploding with joy, was that I am so grateful to be back here in Nevada. That sentence up there... well it's one that even as I type it I still can't believe I'm saying it. It's taken me quite a long journey to get HERE, and I don't me here as in Nevada here, I mean HERE as in this place of contentment that has come over my heart regarding where ever HERE happens to be.

I have to say that there have been countless tears shed and plenty of tantrums had, over not having that kind of an attitude. I'm happy to report though, that Jesus has done a work in this bratty girls heart, and it's a good work. A work I know I couldn't have done on my own.
He has made me realize that it's not about the place, it's about the people.

I now know that even if he called me to live in Texas(please don't dear Lord baby Jesus) I think I could manage to keep this grateful, contentment going.

As long as there was Pie in Texas!
Psh... of course there would be PIE in Texas!!
Those Texans have got the right idea when it comes to pie.
I have heard they make a pie for just about every occasion... so yea I think I could manage, but for now I'm staying put with a happy heart right here in good ole Nev a duh!!

I do so apologize to leave you with  mouths watering ...let me  make it up to you with this quote that I feel fits just perfect with this here Pie Party blog and truly is a recipe for happiness.

"Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn, or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with
LOVE, GRACE, and GRATITUDE."

Country Music, Me ,and This time of year

I have the compulsion to tell you of yet another wierd trait about myself. Around this time of year, and this time of year only ,I really love to listen to country music. I can give the credit of this quirky trait to my all time treasure friend , Allison. Ever since we were teenagers she used to say that she loved to listen to country music, but only when it is cold outside. At that time in my life I was studying voice, and learning opera songs left and right by a very formal voice teacher who happen to HATE country music, therfore I did! Whenever Allie would mention country songs I had no idea what she was talking about and didn't care to find out until my cousin became a member of the then famous country band, Collin Raye. When they came to Reno I got a free ticket to go see them, and well... needless to say I was not so impressed with the country fans(mostly the girls that where crazy out of control over this guy in a pair of Wranglers)but the music did make an impression. I started to fall in love with the stories that the songs tell. I ventured out, and started listening with my friends advice to listen only when the weather started to get cold . I have been hooked ever since.
I dont' really think about it . I just start to listen the minute the trees turn yellow, or the air becomes cool . Somehow my ears tune in and my fingers just move the station over to the country music that I hear on the radio. I love the fall and when the trees are turning I love to just reflect upon seasons changing always in life. Some things you can just count on. Change and country music are two things that I can count on to cause a point of reflection.
I didn't even realize how this had become a tradition until today when listening to Rascal Flatts on the radio I thought, "Why haven't I heard this great song before? Oh I know, because I don't listen until it's cold outside) Then it dawned on me that this is a very strange trait. Why do I only want to listen when it's cold out. It makes no sense. Is it because that is what was suggested first by a friend who does have a way of persuasion with me and I have a deep respect for Allie ? Is it because in the fall/winter I want to go inside and listen to reflective music that tells a story? Is it because I am only patriotic and therefore a country kind of gal around voting season?
I DON'T really know, but this is a trait that is not going away. I am really enjoying what I have been hearing these past few weeks and when spring rolls around maybe I will keep on listening. Maybe not. Just thought I would share. Any other country music fans out there? Got some suggestions for other great songs that I might have missed out on between spring/summer months?

O Christmas Tree O Christmas Tree

For the last 4 years or so the Scofields have had the tradition of cutting down thier own tree. It was a tradition that was of course my brilliant idea, and I think the family just indulged me. Since I was a little girl I have always thought that it was the coolest thing to hear of other families who made a whole day out of picking out thier beloved tree. Going for a ride in the country, sipping hot cocoa, ya know the whole shibang, so naturally when I got older , got to do things my way, I started this tradition with our family.
Well, this year we had planned to join up with some friends and make it a family/friend event(even more fun) but as the flu-bug descended upon the Scofield house , plans got rearranged.
So, we didn't get to go cut down our tree this year but instead went down to our freindly Lowe's and picked up a beautiful douglas fir for under $20 bucks. We made the decision rather quick, threw the tree on top of the Ford and were home about 20 minutes later. My Emma says to me as we are walking through our front door, " See mom if we were cutting down our tree this year we wouldn't be home til it was dark" I didn't appreciate her tone.
Then as we are setting up the tree and having a great time decorating cause we are not all tired from the drive and the hike to find the tree it dawns on me ...."What the heck, this is the most perfect , beautiful , tree we have had in a long time and maybe , just maybe I was wrong about the whole "cutting down our own tree". Just then then the Giants says what I am thinking and we both laugh. He's never been big on the cutting down our own tree thing either(maybe cause he's a realist and i not so much)but like a good hubbie he's been great about doing it all these years anyway.
I'm not saying we won't ever do it again but ya know , just rethinking the whole "traditions" thing and the novelty of it all verses the reality.
Anyway, it was a beautiful day until flu-bug strikes child number 3!!!
